Steamed vegetables

Steamed vegetables are a great, quick healthy side to go with meat, fish, tofu or anything else!

Ingredients

1 Carrots (Optional)
1 Sweet Potato (Optional)
1 Parsnips (Optional)
¼ Courgette (Zucchini) (Optional)
4 Broccoli stems (Optional)

Method

Chop your vegetables into sticks or slices. Then use a steamer - various types are available such as microwave, hob and electric - to cook the vegetables according to the device's instructions.

I use a microwave steamer. It comes in 3 parts. In the bottom part you put water, in the middle part your vegetables and then the lid goes on top. First I put in the hard veg (such as carrots, sweet potatoes, parsnips) and put it in the microwave on a high setting for around 6 minutes. I then add softer veg (such as courgette, broccoli, asparagus) and put it in the microwave for around 4 more minutes.

When a steamer is heated the water in the bottom of it heats up, creating steam. This steam then cooks the food inside the steamer.
