On March 13th the UK and international inflammatory bowel disease surgery community are coming together in Newcastle (UK) for the day to share their expert experiences with each other to help improve surgery for IBD patients.

We have been given a unique opportunity to attend this conference for doctors, by doctors to report back to IBD patients about what is discussed.

Throughout the event - called ACPGBI IBD Newcastle - we will be filming the talks and presentations and grabbing interviews with doctors and surgeons. Then, in the week after the event, we will be sharing these on our YouTube channel and across our social media.

Can’t wait until then? You can follow along with the discussion on the day on social media using #ibdnewcastle.

Just some of the talks on the day include:

  • Controversies & Innovations in Pregnant Patients
  • Controversies & Innovations in Paediatric Surgical Patients
  • The Future of IBD Surgery
  • The Microbiome and IBD: What Surgeons Need to Know
  • Pouch Excision: Who, When and How
  • Abdominal Wall Reconstruction in IBD
  • The Appendix in UC
  • Perianal Crohn’s Management

IBDrelief co-founder Seb Tucknott said: “We are really looking forward to attending IBD Newcastle and being able to report back to patients what is discussed at the conference. We regularly hear from patients that they would like clinically-focused events such as IBD Newcastle to be more accessible and available to them.

“At IBDrelief we are passionate about getting patients more involved in IBD research and in shaping clinical practice to empower them to feel more in control of their care.

“It’s been great to work with colorectal surgeon Richard Brady and the IBD Newcastle organising team ahead of the day who have been supportive in our vision to bridge the gap between the clinical and patient worlds.”

IBD Newcastle organiser and consultant colorectal surgeon Richard Brady said: “The ACPGBI IBD Newcastle event is a must for anyone interested in the surgical aspects of inflammatory bowel disease care and, as we know, many patients will require surgery during their lives with IBD.

“As a surgeon myself there has never been a more interesting and rapidly changing time in IBD surgery with a range of new technologies, techniques and insights. The conference really does bring together the best and brightest in the field and covers all topics relevant from perianal fistulas to pregnancy, pouches to robotic surgery and everything in between.

“It is a packed day with more than 15 keynote speakers from across all of the major IBD centres in the UK and some from Europe, more than 150 surgeons and other healthcare staff are attending and more than 50 NHS organisations are sending delegates.

“In addition to our sponsors, patient representatives and traditional charities, I am delighted to welcome Seb and the IBDrelief crew as we were keen to be inclusive and engage a wider audience.

“I have been so impressed by the high quality of the online content and work from IBDrelief and I am delighted that they will be coming to document their experiences for their wider IBD audience, but also get some first class and informative one-to-one interviews with the movers and shakers in the specialty.”
